Times Tables
At Elmstead Wood, we recognise that fluency with times tables underpins mathematical understanding. Knowing your times tables will help you more easily grasp a wide variety of other concepts such as division, fractions, and percentages.
Below is an outline of the National Curriculum expectations for each year group.

| Year 2 | 2, 5 and 10 times tables and related division facts |
| Year 3 | 3, 4 and 8 times tables and related division facts |
| Year 4 | All times tables up to 12 x 12 and related division facts |
| Year 5 & 6 |
Revise all times tables (up to 12 x 12) and further develop division facts. Apply times tables fluently into formal written methods Multiply 3 or more digit numbers by 1 and 2 digit numbers |
To help children to meet these targets, we use Times Tables Rockstars.
Times Tables Rockstars is an awarding-winning maths programme that takes all the worry out of learning times tables and has a proven track record of boosting children’s fluency and recall in multiplication and division.
Your child's teacher will give them a login. You can download the app or login on any device that can access the internet.
Additional ways you can help your child to learn their times tables at home:
- Download times tables sung to music, or even a rap.
- When you are out and about, look for numbers everywhere and then ask your child times table related facts about them.
- Practise on the walk to school!
- Find out from your child’s teacher which times tables they are having trouble with.
- Make flashcards of the times tables at home with your child – set aside a time each day to sit down together and practice. Making the flashcards is also a learning exercise, since your child will need to know the answer to each multiplication problem before writing it on the back of the flashcard.
- Enlist the aid of your family. Agree to ask each other random times tables throughout the day when your child is around to hear. Race to see who can answer the problem first. Your child will enjoy beating you and other family members to the answer.
